Spyplane Films & Provident Films Present- “Upside”
It’s all how you look at it. From the looks of things, Solomon White has a well-mapped future. Finish his senior year of high school, select an elite university, continue his lacrosse career, and reap the rewards of success on whichever road life takes him. But a devastating hit on the lacrosse field leaves his world literally turned upside down. Will he be able to gain the perspective needed to face his new reality?
UPSIDE provides a fresh look at life through the eyes of Soli (Randall Bentley, “Heroes”), a young athlete struggling to discover where he’s headed, both figuratively and literally. Viewing the world upside down is a challenge few will ever face, but that hardly is the extent of Soli’s pressing concerns.
He has trouble at home with his mom, he’s trying to end his relationship with his girlfriend, and he has to come to grips with a teacher that thinks he can be much more than he wants to be. Suddenly, Soli’s senior year looking nothing like he imagined it would be.
Add in Wren (Leah Sims), an unlikely love interest with a strong faith in God, and Soli must take a new look at everything he believes in. Can Soli win the heart of Wren, who happens to be blind? Can he believe in something he can’t see? Will he find a new direction for his life, even if his eyesight never returns to normal?
When you can’t trust your eyes, you still have your voice. This unique story is an inspiring reminder that when life gets you down, there’s always an UPSIDE.
I first want to say I LOVED this movie. I would categorize it as a “Christian Teen Drama”. There is a bit of romance, comedy, and joy.
Soli thought he had his life all planned out until an accident caused his life to turn upside down, in more ways then one. We get to see Soli realize that life isn’t what we make it. We can make plans in our life but if they aren’t God’s plans for us He will lead us in the right direction. Soli is brought together with a professor who tells him about fate and how he had met his wife and that maybe there is something he is to find though his problems with seeing right-side up. Soli realizes that maybe this is why he meet a blind girl named Wren. Slowly Soli & Wren fall in love. But most importantly Wren shows Soli her true love, God. After a visit to church a major change occurs in Soli’s life and he starts to see the work of God more clearly in his life. Soli asks Jesus into his life and also prayers for clarity on what he is to do in his life, follow what everyone else wants him to do or follow his heart.
I love how this movie shows me that life isn’t what we make it but that when we trust in God we will go down the paths “perfect” for us. Our life may not always be easy but we are never alone. Wren told Soli many times that she was not afraid because she knew she was never alone with God in her life.
As for the quality of the movie. I could see this being showed in the theater, the acting was real and believable. My only problem was there were some microphone issues throughout the film, which for me was distracting, but may not be noticeable to others.
This movie is totally worth buying and watching with your friends and family. They even offer a special package for churches and big groups who wish to view it.
