“How to Really Love Your Adult Child” by Dr. Gary Chapman
“At every stage of a child’s development, parents tend to think, After this, it will get easier. The truth is, with each new stage, parenting becomes different. Out of your house doesn’t mean out of your life—and out of school doesn’t always mean out of the house! The challenges of parenting don’t end at 18, but the immense supply of parenting advice and resources does! That’s why Drs. Ross Campbell and Gary Chapman, authors of The Five Love Languages of Children, have teamed up to bring you this invaluable resource for handling the responsibilities that come with parenting your child who is no longer a child. They might make choices you disagree with or face trials you aren’t prepared for—but in How to Really Love Your Adult Child, you’ll find excellent advice that will help you give them the love, understanding, and guidance they still desperately need and crave from you.”
“How to really LOVE your ADULT child” is a very interesting, important and practical resource for parents that have adult children or are soon-to-be parents of young adult children. Very reputable authors, Ross Campbell, MD, and Gary Chapman, PhD, share with concerned parents what they have learned through their counselling practices, family research and their own experiences as parents so that other parents can develop positive, growing relationships with their adult children. Campbell and Chapman focus primarily on the children born between roughly 1980 and 1995, members of Generation Y, or the Millennials or Mosaics, children who grew up in a far less stable and more rapidly changing society than their parents. They write from a Judeo-Christian worldview, but invite those of any faith tradition to explore these areas of concern as well.
The primary goal of parents, of which the authors remind their readers, is to guide their children towards independence and maturity. However, because of differences in expectations, societal and philosophical changes, etc., there are many hurdles that parents face that could hamper or destroy a confident, growing relationship with their adult child. Campbell and Chapman do an excellent job of helping the parent understand today’s young adult. They proceed to give recommendations and warnings in how to deal with issues such as when your adult child is not succeeding, when the nest isn’t emptying, when your child moves back home, conflicts with lifestyle issues, and becoming an in-law and a grandparent. They also give very necessary tools so that parents meet their own needs, something that can be often overlooked in the crisis events that may arise.
As a parent of adult children, I would very highly recommend this book. It has been a helpful resource of encouragement in how I can continue to show love and care in positive, practical ways to my children. It has also brought timely words of caution, so that I can keep our relationship open, positive and growing. It is only as I, as a parent, prayerfully keep the lines of communication open, that I can continue to be a positive influence in their lives toward their reaching independence and maturity.
