“Area 51: An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military Base” by Annie Jacobsen
“It is the most famous military installation in the world. And it doesn’t exist. Located a mere seventy-five miles outside of Las Vegas in Nevada’s desert, the base has never been acknowledged by the U.S. government-but Area 51 has captivated imaginations for decades.
Myths and hypotheses about Area 51 have long abounded, thanks to the intense secrecy enveloping it. Some claim it is home to aliens, underground tunnel systems, and nuclear facilities. Others believe that the lunar landing itself was filmed there. The prevalence of these rumors stems from the fact that no credible insider has ever divulged the truth about his time inside the base. Until now.
Annie Jacobsen had exclusive access to nineteen men who served the base proudly and secretly for decades and are now aged 75-92, and unprecedented access to fifty-five additional military and intelligence personnel, scientists, pilots, and engineers linked to the secret base, thirty-two of whom lived and worked there for extended periods. In Area 51, Jacobsen shows us what has really gone on in the Nevada desert, from testing nuclear weapons to building super-secret, supersonic jets to pursuing the War on Terror.”

David’s Thoughts-
I had my dad review this book as I knew it would be his type of book to read. Below are his thoughts.
“If you’re expecting a book about aliens and the faking of the Apollo moon landings, then you’ll be disappointed with this book. However, if you want a complete history of Area 51 from Oct. 31, 1938 when Orson Welles broadcast “War of the Worlds” and scared the nation up to the present day, this is the book for you.

Jacobsen goes into detail about government cover-ups, scientific research, and the use of UFO hysteria to hide what was really going on at Area 51. I enjoyed learning what was really going on during the Cold War and what has continued to go on to this day. I found it amusing that the government would allow people to talk about UFOs and aliens living on the base to hide the fact that we were building spy planes there instead.

This book will open your eyes to the lengths that our government went to perpetuate a myth in order to cover up top secret activities. It exposes a lot, but still leaves many questions. What is the real, complete story of Area 51? Annie Jacobsen has pulled back the curtain and come closer than anyone I’m aware of in explaining much of the mystery.

I recommend this to anyone who enjoys history, to sci-fi buffs, and to government conspiracy theorists.”
