Celebrated my first 5K run! (plus a GIVEAWAY!)

11 weeks ago I set out on a journey to run a 5K. Within 10 weeks I fulfilled that dream. With the help of’s Couch-to-5K program(app) and the support of my family, friends and you guys, I was able to keep on going. I HATED running. I think that is why I set up this challenge for myself, to prove that I can do it no matter what. When I first started the program and the first week I was only running 1 minute and walking 1 minute I thought this program was crazy. That minute killed me, but I pushed on. Each week when it got harder and I felt like I couldn’t breath and my legs would not go any further I would repeat the above quote (in the photo) in my head. I also told myself it’s only a half hour workout and once I’m done I can relax. There were MANY times I felt like giving up but I knew I’d regret quitting and I also wanted to show my kids and you all that no matter what you can do what you put your MIND to.

In the 10 weeks of training I ran in- rain, snow, cold, heat and extreme wind, up & down hill. I ran on days I was tired, on days I didn’t have a lot of time to give up, on days my muscles were still sore from the run before. My oldest asked me why I kept on running even when I didn’t want to or when it was raining. I told her “No Excuses” if you want to be healthy and fit you can’t let the excuses get in your way. She began to use the “no excuses” saying on me often. Especially on days I was procrastinating going out and running.

Last weekend I had a celebration at my house, along with running my first official 5K. The beginning of the day we had 8 people here to celebrate and cheer me on as I passed the finish line. Then about 10 more people from my neighborhood stopped by to celebrate with me and talk about my weight-loss journey. I love sharing my story with who ever I can and I hope I can inspire others to get healthy too.
I’m not going to lie, I was a little sad not as many people could come but I know a lot of people were cheering me on at home or on the road. I’m so thankful and feel blessed to have such an amazing support group. That is the key for anyone wanting to take a health journey of their own. You can’t do it by yourself, you need people who will cheer you on, keep you accountable and to motivate you. I’m HAPPY to have that support all around me. Funny thing is when I started 17 months ago I had many ‘friends” tell me I couldn’t do this, that I’d loose weight but put it back on. Or that I wouldn’t be able to loose any weight at all. Why I said this was funny is because it was those people who made me want to prove them wrong. Then after awhile I wanted to keep on going because of how great I was feeling.
I finished my run in 28 minute and 59 seconds. I felt great throughout the whole run and the finish line felt even more amazing. I had planned a speech I wanted to share at the end of my run but it didn’t feel like the right audience to share it with, all of them have been there throughout my journey and know my thoughts about health and fitness. So, I’ll save that speech for another opportunity.

I was able to give all my guests, as well as a few I knew who wanted to come, a swag bag full of products that have helped me on my health journey. I want to thank Adult Essentials Gummies, IronKids Gummies, Operation Fit, Almond Fresh, Smart Betty Kitchener/Waterloo and Produce for Kids for donating to the swag bags and for all their support.(for my readers who couldn’t come out to celebrate you can have a chance to win a swag bag of your own, see below) These products/companies I have used with my fitness/health journey.

I completed my goal of running a 5K. My next goal is to run a 10K in October and then a half-marathon in January 2013 (really really want to be able to save up enough money to attend the “Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend” in Florida). it’s fun to set goals and be able to reach them. It gives you the power of accomplishment.
