Cross-Training for Hockey

posted in Uncategorized on by

Hockey players that want to be the best don’t rest when they hang up their skates during the off-season. This is the time of year when it’s important to work even harder. Hockey players that want to improve their games should do as much cross-training as possible during the off-season. It will improve every facet of their games, letting them excel when the season starts and it is time to lace up and get on the ice once again.

There are lots of great cross-training activities that hockey players can choose from. One of the most important things to do is strength training. Hockey players need to work on strength training that allows them to be as explosive as possible. This means performing sets with low numbers of repetitions but with large weights. They need to explode as fast as possible when bringing the weight up, and then slowly return the weight back down.

Getting stronger is important, but it is also important to improve flexibility as well. One of the best cross-training activities for hockey players to do is yoga. This will greatly improve the level of a player’s flexibility. The increased flexibility will allow players to skate faster and be more agile out on the ice. Improved flexibility is also something that helps to prevent injury. Best of all, yoga can be continued during the hockey season to relieve the soreness and tension that builds up during grueling workouts.

It is also important to improve cardiovascular fitness during the off-season as well. There are many ways to do this. Running is always a great way to improve cardiovascular fitness, but it can be hard on the joints. For those with joint troubles, swimming and bicycling are low-impact activities that will do a fine job of allowing players to improve their cardiovascular fitness. Improved cardiovascular fitness allows players to skate faster and longer without becoming fatigued. Building up cardiovascular fitness is one of the best ways for layers to get an edge over their opponents during the off-season.

For those who don’t like to go to the gym to work out, they can stay fit during the off-season by participating in other sports. Any sport that improves cardiovascular fitness and strength will work well. Many hockey players like to play lacrosse during the off-season because many aspects of the game are similar to hockey. However, any sport that helps players improve their fitness levels will work.
