“If We Survive” by Andrew Klavan
I want to start this review with a warning, *if you read at night you will stay up late to keep on reading*. Yes, that happened to me every night this week. I’d start reading at 10PM saying I’d read for only two hours, the next thing I know it would be 1 or 2 in the morning. The story is fast paced and sucked me in that deeply.
Four kids and a pastor travel to Central America to help rebuild a school. The day they are to leave things change, there is war/terror in the country and they are now on a journey to stay alive and make it home. But they have to trust a man who seems fishy. Not everyone makes it out alive or in one piece.
It really is a fast paced book and take you through all the emotions. You’re joyful when the school is finished. You have many laughable moments. There is much tragedy, I was crying a lot. And there is adventure. But most importantly, there is Faith. “Don’t worry about anything. Pray about everything…” That is the focus of the narrator, one of the kids named Will. When faced with danger his first reaction was to feel afraid to be worried but then he would remember that quote. Another thing a couple of them realize is even in tragedy, facing death what is important is their soul is the same. God designed us that way.
If you’re looking for a fast paced, Christian adventure book I would very much recommend this book. (Maybe not for night reading, unless you’re ok with less sleep *wink*). It’s pretty intense at some parts so I would say it’s for young adults and older. If you think your teen can mentally and emotionally hand intense books then it would be ok for them too.
