My Thoughts-
“Escape from Mercy Hall.” by Garth Edwards

This book is intended for ages 9-14, however I have to say I even enjoyed reading it and I’m in my 30’s.

A group of kids wonder out in the middle of the night and go beyond the hedge. The next thing they know the hedge closes and they are in a strange and almost scarey land. They’ve been told it’s dangerous beyond the hedge and to never leave. One of their first experiences is a horse drawn carriage but it’s not pulled by a horse, it’s directed by an electrical current under the ground. From there, things get stranger and more dangerous.

I found the book moved slow at first and then I found I couldn’t stop reading it. I wanted to know more. I wanted to see these kids succeed and stay safe. I was holding my breath through parts of it. I even caught myself thinking I was in the book with these kids.

I can see this story becoming a great movie. There was so much imagery and action, the movie would have you wanting to watch more.

The book is the first of the Thorn Gate trilogy. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next two. If you enjoy futuristic, thrillers with a lot of adventure I think you will love this book too.
