My Thoughts-
Ragamuffin: Based on the Life of Rich Mullins

I became a Christian in 1990. The youth group I started attending played the song “Awesome God” all the time. This was my first introduction to the singer songwriter, Rich Mullins. From that point in my life to my first year attending Moody Bible Institute, I got to know many of his other songs. I remember the day Rich Mullins died. I was in my second year at Moody and they announced at chapel that Rich Mullins died in a car accident. The campus was in shock. His music played a large part in my worship with God.

When I was given the opportunity to review “Ragamuffin” a movie based after Rich Mullins life, I was excited. I never really knew much about him, only about his music. The movie starts out with Rich Mullins recording some music in an old church. We then are taken back to when he was a young kid. He never seemed to live up to his dad’s idea of what a boy should do. We see the dark side of what Rich Mullins went through, as he grew up and his journey to becoming a musician. We see a lot of heartache and death come into his life, as well as his battle with alcohol and smoking. But we do see his love and devotion to God through out it all. He didn’t even want to become rich and famous, he just wanted to glorify God through the gift God gave him. He even lived with an allowance of what an average man would make and gave the rest of his money away. That amazes me. Ragamuffin comes from Brennan Mannings and one of his sermons that has now turned into a discipleship ministry. Rich Mullins heard a sermon and sought out council from Brennan.

This movie was a tough movie to watch but a really great one. It showed me that no matter how bad I am, or how bad life is, that God is there, waiting. I even loved that they included many quote from Rich Mullins from his concerts and relationships with others. I’ll post two photos with quotes at the bottom of this review.

The actor, Michael Koch, was amazing. When the movie started out and I heard singing, I really thought it was Rich Mullins singing and then they show the actor and it was him. He sounded just like him. I also though he did great at showing the emotions throughout the film. One interesting fact about it is he was raised in Kitchener, Ontario, where I’m living now. Such a small crazy world.

I would recommend this movie to anyone who wants to know more about Rich Mullins life or is seeking God. I do give this warning, there are a few swear words in it, drinking and smoking. This movie might not be appropriate for young children.
