“Why Do We Call it Christmas?” DVD from the What’s In The Bible? series.
VeggieTales creator, Phil Vischer joins a puppet named, Buck Denver, in explaining to us what the different symbols of Christmas means. With the mix between puppets and cartoons, we learn the meaning behind the word Christmas, when was Jesus born?, who is Santa Clause?, why do we have a Christmas tree? and who is Emmanuel, plus a few other “Christmasy” things.
I don’t normally like to compare two movies out around the same time to each other, but in this case it’s good for both movies. Last week I introduced you to a new movie out called, “Saving Christmas” it explains a lot behind the different traditions we have around Christmas. I wouldn’t say this movie was for kids, only because it would be hard to follow. With “Why Do We Call it Christmas?”, it takes a lot of the same traditions addressed in the other movie but makes them easy for kids to understand and follow. Both movies stick to the same Christian principles, they just reach a different target age.
“Why Do We Call it Christmas?” is very cute. My kids were really into it. They were excited to learn more about things we’ve talked about and things they’ve learned/heard at church. It also has subtle humor that made the DVD very entertaining for all ages. We also enjoyed watching the special features, the outtakes were very funny and the sing-a-longs were short but fun to sing along with as a family.
The DVD case comes with a leaflet inside that has a small study guide in it. This is nice to look at together after the movie. It also has a coloring page your children can color and make their own creations.
As a family we really enjoyed watching this movie. We’ve enjoyed it so much we are looking into buying from the What’s in the Bible? series. If you’re looking for a great way to talk about Christmas with your kids, this movie is perfect for you.
