“23 Blast” is a heart warming movie based after a true story. It’s 98 minutes long is rated PG-13 (although I would let my children watch it. I’m not sure why it’s PG-13, other then the fact there is some underage drinking that is portrayed as wrong). The story is based after a high school boy named Travis Freeman, he was a star football player with a promising future. We also meet Travis’ best friend, Jerry Baker, he’s an awesome quarterback but he is also troubled, with underaged drinking and not doing well in school.
One morning Travis wakes up and is face is all swollen. His parents take him to the doctor where they find out he has a bad infection and needs surgery. When Travis wakes up he finds he can’t see. The infection took his sight. He struggles with his faith in God and falls in to a depression. It was his social aid that slapped him out of his funk. She taught him to live as a bland man, how to function in this world. He makes the decision to go back to his high school to finish is final year. What follows is nothing short of a miracle. He is asked to play football, even though he can’t see. There is a lot of rejection to him playing, but his perseverance proves the whole town wrong.
The movie has a lot of big name actors including, Glee’s Max Adler and Alexa PenaVega that I know from the Spy Kids movies. There is also other familiar names in this movie, Dylan Baker, Stephen Lang and the Real Travis Freeman makes an appearance (he became a preacher and portrays one in the film). Actually one of the cool things in this movie is they use a lot of the families of the real life people this story is based after. That to me makes the movie even more special.
I loved this movie. I seem to be a sucker for good, clean, faith filled Football movies. This is another one I’m excited to have in my collection. I also suggest you watch the special features. You’ll find the movie even more impactful. This one would be fun to watch with a youth group and then have a discussion about how to overcome out obstacles and turn to God in those hard times. It’s inspiring, uplifting and heartwarming.
