Chris’ Thoughts-

I really enjoyed the newest album by Hillsong United. I haven’t been a diehard fan who has listened to every one of their albums but I do know many of their songs as well as songs by other Hillsong groups. I was expecting to hear more upbeat, congregational style songs, but I was impressed by the slower, more complex music still with a strong rhythm. I listened to the album a few times through while working on other projects so at first I was paying attention more to the music itself more then the lyrics. The album flows very well together musically and I liked the variety in singers and instruments used throughout the album.

For those who are not familiar with their music, I would consider it to be alternative with a little bit of electric dance style, with very complex musical structure. I found it to be well mixed and mastered (coming from an audio nerd).

When I did listen closer to the lyrics after the second or third time through the album I was also impressed by many of the songs.

I think my three favorite songs are Empires (The title track), Rule, and Closer Than You Know. I like them both because of how they sound and their lyrics.

I would recommend this album for those looking for new music to listen to, and new ways to encounter and worship. I will have to listen to the album a few more times, but I don’t think this will be an album where many of the songs will translate well into a church worship service setting, but I could be wrong.
