In this post I’ll be talking about both the “Old Fashioned” novelization and “The Old Fashioned Way” devotional. Below you’ll see a way to win a copy of both book AND the DVD that I reviewed last week.
“Old Fashioned” novelization written by Rene Gutteridge, based on the screenplay by Rik Swartzwelder. This book is based after the movie, I usually try to read a book before watching the movie but because this was written after I decided to read it after I watched the movie. Although the book and movie are similar there are a lot of differences. The book goes into more details and adds parts that weren’t in the movie, for instance- at the end of the book Clay goes to the grave-site of a friend’s wife to talk about his feelings for Amber and how he could make things right with her. The book paints a clearer picture of what the story is trying to capture (the movie story that is). I found that watching the movie and reading the book together made the story more real to me and I understood more of what Amber went through in her past, as well as what Clay went through in his past.

“The Old Fashioned Way” devotional by Ginger Kolbaba based on the screenplay by Rik Swartzwelder. This devotional is focused more towards singles looking into dating or those who are engaged. Even though I am married, I still found some of the chapters helpful for my life or talking with others about their life. This book addresses dating in today’s day and age. Is it possible to date and keep old fashion traditions in play? How does online dating play into the old fashion way? Can we be “just friends” with the opposite sex? I would recommend this book to every Christian that is of the dating age. I feel this will help strengthen your relationships and future marriage. YES, it’s ok to be “Old Fashioned” when it comes to dating. This devotional will use examples from the movie and support what it is saying with the Bible.
Both books and the movie are worth getting. It would be great for church libraries to have on hand. It would make for a great Bible study topic as well. But if you’d rather explore this topic on your own, this set can be done on your personal time.
